Free Wordle Helper — Solve Wordle in Fewer Guesses

WordForge's Wordle Helper is a free online tool that helps you solve Wordle puzzles faster. Enter your guesses, mark each letter with its color feedback (green, yellow, or gray), and the helper instantly filters all 5-letter English words down to only those that still match. It also suggests the best next guesses — words that would eliminate the most remaining candidates based on letter frequency analysis.

Whether you're stuck on Wordle #1247, playing Wordle Unlimited, or tackling variants like Quordle and Octordle, this tool helps you make smarter guesses and solve in fewer tries. The average player solves Wordle in 4 guesses; with the helper, you can consistently solve in 3.

How to Use the Wordle Helper

  1. Enter your guess. Type the 5 letters of your Wordle guess into the 5 input boxes. (You can also use the example guesses provided.)
  2. Mark the colors. Click each colored tile above the inputs to cycle through: Gray (letter not in word), Green (correct letter, correct position), Yellow (correct letter, wrong position).
  3. Browse candidates. The Possible Answers section shows every 5-letter word that still matches your constraints.
  4. Check best next guesses. The Best Next Guesses section ranks words by elimination power — try one of these for your next guess.
  5. Add more guesses. After each Wordle guess, click "Add another guess" and repeat. The candidate list narrows quickly.

The Math Behind Wordle Strategy

Wordle has 12,972 possible 5-letter words (per the official word list), of which 2,309 are valid answers. Each guess provides information through color feedback:

  • Green — confirms a letter and its position (most information)
  • Yellow — confirms a letter is in the word but not at that position
  • Gray — eliminates a letter entirely

Information-theoretically, the best starting word is the one that, on average across all possible answers, splits the candidate set most evenly. Words like CRANE, SLATE, and ADIEU are popular because they contain the most common English letters (E, A, R, I, O, T, N, S, L) without repeats.

Best Wordle Starting Words (Ranked)

Based on letter frequency in the Wordle answer list:

  1. CRANE — covers C, R, A, N, E (all common)
  2. SLATE — covers S, L, A, T, E
  3. ADIEU — covers 4 vowels (A, I, E, U)
  4. RAISE — covers R, A, I, S, E
  5. TRACE — covers T, R, A, C, E
  6. AUDIO — covers all 5 vowels including the rare U and O
  7. STARE — covers S, T, A, R, E
  8. IRATE — covers I, R, A, T, E

Avoid starting with words that repeat letters (like "EERIE" or "SILLS") — they waste information. Also avoid rare letters (Q, Z, J, X) in your first guess.

Hard Mode Strategy

In Wordle Hard Mode, you must use any revealed greens and yellows in subsequent guesses. This makes the helper even more valuable — you need to find words that fit specific letter positions while still eliminating candidates. Use the Word Finder tool in combination: set the position constraints (greens) and required letters (yellows) to brainstorm valid hard-mode guesses.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Wordle Helper work?

Enter your Wordle guess into the 5 letter boxes, then click each letter to cycle its color: Gray (not in the word), Yellow (in the word but wrong position), Green (correct position). WordForge instantly filters all 5-letter English words to show only those matching your constraints. The "Best Next Guesses" section ranks words by how many letters they would eliminate.

What are the best Wordle starting words?

The best starting words maximize letter elimination by including common letters (E, A, R, I, O, T, N, S, L) without repeating letters. Popular data-backed choices include CRANE, SLATE, ADIEU, RAISE, TRACE, AUDIO, and STARE. CRANE is often cited as optimal because it covers the 5 most common letters.

How does the Best Next Guess ranking work?

After each guess, WordForge computes letter frequency across all remaining candidate words. The "best" next guess is the word that, if used, would eliminate the most candidates — even if it's not the answer. This is based on information theory: each guess should maximize entropy (uncertainty reduction).

Can I use the Wordle Helper to cheat?

Technically yes, but we don't recommend it for the daily Wordle — it ruins the fun. The Helper is most useful for: (1) learning optimal strategy, (2) solving Wordle variants like Quordle or Octordle, (3) getting unstuck after a bad start, and (4) analyzing your game after the fact to see what you missed.

Why are there so many possible answers?

English has roughly 12,000 5-letter words. After your first guess with 2-3 greens or yellows, the candidate list typically drops to 50-500. After your second guess, it's usually 5-20. The Helper shows all candidates so you can pick the most likely one based on common English usage patterns.
