Wordle Strategy: The Best Starting Words and Why
Why words like CRANE, SLATE, and ADIEU consistently rank as the best openers. The math behind information-theoretic Wordle solving.
The Wordle Optimization Problem
Wordle is fundamentally an information-theory problem. Each guess provides information through color feedback: green (correct letter, correct position), yellow (correct letter, wrong position), or gray (letter not in word). The goal is to maximize the information gained with each guess, so you can identify the answer within 6 tries — ideally 3 or fewer.
With 12,972 possible 5-letter words (and 2,309 valid answers in the original Wordle list), the optimal starting word is the one that, on average across all possible answers, splits the candidate set most evenly. This is measured by entropy — the more evenly a word splits the candidate set, the higher its entropy.
The Best Wordle Starting Words (Ranked)
Based on letter frequency analysis of the official Wordle answer list:
- CRANE — covers C, R, A, N, E. The most-recommended word by data scientists. Contains 4 of the top 6 most common letters in Wordle answers (E, A, R, N).
- SLATE — covers S, L, A, T, E. The most common starting letter in Wordle answers is S, so opening with an S-word is statistically sound.
- ADIEU — covers 4 vowels (A, I, E, U). The vowel-heavy approach lets you quickly identify which vowels are in the answer.
- RAISE — covers R, A, I, S, E. Five of the most common letters in Wordle answers.
- TRACE — covers T, R, A, C, E. A balanced approach with common consonants and vowels.
- AUDIO — covers all 5 vowels (A, U, D, I, O). The extreme vowel approach — great for narrowing down vowels fast.
- STARE — covers S, T, A, R, E. Similar to SLATE but with R instead of L.
- IRATE — covers I, R, A, T, E. Strong coverage of common letters.
- AROSE — covers A, R, O, S, E. Good vowel coverage with R and S.
- LEAST — covers L, E, A, S, T. Balanced approach.
The Math: Why CRANE Wins
CRANE's dominance comes from its letter coverage. The 5 most common letters in Wordle answers are E (appears in 10.5% of answers), A (9.7%), R (8.5%), O (7.5%), and T (7.3%). CRANE hits 4 of these top 5 (E, A, R, plus N which is 6th at 6.5%).
When you play CRANE first, the average remaining candidate count drops from 2,309 to about 60. That's a 97% reduction in candidate space from a single guess. By comparison, a poor starting word like "QAJAQ" (yes, it's valid) leaves you with 1,800+ candidates on average.
Strategy: Second Guess
After your first guess, your strategy depends on the feedback:
If you got 0-1 letters (most common)
Play a second word that uses completely different letters. If you opened with CRANE and got nothing, try "SLOTH" or "PUDGY" to test the next batch of common letters.
If you got 2-3 yellows
You know which letters are in the word but not their positions. Play a word that uses those letters in different positions. For example, if A and E are yellow from CRANE, try "BEAST" or "HEART" to test different positions.
If you got 1-2 greens
You've locked in positions. Use our Wordle Helper to see all candidates that fit, then pick the one that eliminates the most options.
Hard Mode Strategy
In Hard Mode, you must use any revealed greens and yellows in subsequent guesses. This makes the game harder but also more strategic:
- Plan ahead. When you get a green, immediately think about which words could still fit and how to eliminate them.
- Use yellows strategically. A yellow letter must appear in your next guess — use it in a different position to test multiple spots at once.
- Avoid waste.Don't guess a word that can't possibly be the answer just to eliminate letters — Hard Mode doesn't allow it.
- Use the Word Finder. The Word Finder tool is invaluable for Hard Mode — set the green positions and required letters to brainstorm valid guesses.
Common Wordle Mistakes to Avoid
- Starting with the same word every day. While CRANE is great, varying your opener keeps the game fresh and prevents you from getting stuck in patterns.
- Guessing words with repeated letters early.Words like "EERIE" or "SILLS" waste information. Save repeated-letter guesses for later when you have a specific reason.
- Ignoring plural forms.Wordle answers are almost never plurals (no "CATS", "DOGS"), but valid guesses can be. Use plurals in your second or third guess to test S placement.
- Forgetting uncommon letters.J, Q, X, and Z appear in fewer Wordle answers, but they're still valid. If your candidate list includes "JAZZY", don't dismiss it just because J is rare.
- Not using the Wordle Helper. When stuck, our Wordle Helper shows all valid candidates and ranks them by elimination power. It's not cheating — it's strategy.
Conclusion
The best Wordle strategy combines a strong starting word (CRANE, SLATE, or ADIEU), adaptive second-guess logic based on color feedback, and strategic use of tools when stuck. With practice, you can consistently solve Wordle in 3-4 guesses and join the top 5% of players who solve in 3 or fewer.
